New Mexico Squash Racquets Association Hello,
New Mexico Squash Players,
Just a few quick notes before the end of the year.
With November renewals and four new members, the NMSRA has its largest membership
in 4 years. We currently have 52 members! Welcome new members John Burksa of
Los Alamos, Jeff Langdon of Santa Fe, Clem Gunn and Bill Parker of the Kiva
Club. We are still shy of the 80+ members of the late 80's, but we are getting
there.
On November 4th El Gancho hosted "La Noche de Calabasas." Both courts
were busy from 5-9pm with 16 players from Las Vegas, Los Alamos, Albuquerque
and Santa Fe. It was a good opportunity for players to meet one another. A word
of warning, the players from the United World College in Las Vegas are looking
for competition!!!
This is the weekend that the Kiva Club shines. With new carpet and 100+ players
from all over the country and Canada, the Kiva Classic is New Mexico's
premier tournament. Play begins on Thursday December 4th for local players and
concludes with the finals on Sunday the 7th. This Masters level age group only
tournament for Hardball Doubles and Softball Singles is a must see. Top level
matches are scheduled all day Friday with particular attention given to the
cocktail hour matches. This weekend is a great opportunity to see some wonderful
Squash and a real nice club.
The 7th Not the Vegetable softball singles tournament is at El Gancho
on January 23-25. Sanctioned skill levels and 50+, plus Women and Juniors. It
would also be great to have a 60+ division. Sean Gallagher at Smith Barney is
a sponsor for this tournament. Head Racquets is helping with prizes again. Walter
Burke Catering is providing the Squash Hors D'oeuvres for the Saturday Margarita
Party.
There are plans to visit the United World College this winter and a clinic is
being planned for women in Albuquerque.
